Here are three great books on the believer’s identity in Christ, and an essential booklet.
Who Am I?: Identity in Christ by Jerry Bridges
This book is only 95 pages, but Bridges has an ability to say much with few words. No sentence is wasted. No word is fluff. This book takes us back to the fundamentals of the Christian faith: who Christ is and who we are in Him. Bridges grounds every truth about the believer in this reality–the Christian is in “union with” Christ. He reminds us that, yes, we are are fallen creatures, but that we are also restored to a special place with God in Christ.
Chapter 4 talks about our adoption–a critical reality to our new identity. Bridges reminds us that adoption places us into an intimate relationship with God, and grants us special access to God–like a child turning to her Father.
This book continually returns the reader to the necessity of seeing themselves as God sees them. No matter what others say or what our feelings say, their lies are not the truth. Instead, we are to reckon who we are in Christ. Out of this new identity, we shall live free from self-doubt and the world’s hate.
Identity: Who You Are in Christ by Eric Geiger
Each person needs to resolve this fundamental need and issue–what is my identity. Through the issue of identity, the believer can answer three essential questions of life: 1) Who am I 2) Where did I come from, and 3) Where am I going? Eric Geiger challenges believers to apply to everyday life the truth about their identity. And he illustrates the various dimensions of our identity in a personal way.
So many Christians are living defeated lives. Before they can live an abundant life–the life Christ offers–they must know and apply this foundational reality–they are in Christ. Geiger presents this material in a way that can be easily understood, and if applied, would transform the believer’s spiritual journey.
Who Do You Think You Are?: Finding Your True Identity in Christ by Mark Driscoll
Who Do You Think You Are demonstrates Driscoll’s exceptional insight into scripture. This book walks the believer through key passages in Ephesians and presents practical insights regarding our identity, mostly who we are in Christ.
Each chapter follows a similar pattern–the scripture, a story that provides insight into the theme of the chapter, followed by an analysis of the passage. Then he enhances his thoughts with those of reformed writer, and follows that up with an application and challenge. And each chapter is an “I Am” statement–a statement about our identity IN Christ. As Driscroll walks us through each chapter, it’s increasingly obvious that who we are is directly linked to Christ. A helpful resource for any one who wants an expositional approach to who we are in Christ.
A Necessary Booklet: Identity in Christ: Making it Real
The books above are great at explaining the biblical basis for your Christian identity. But these books don’t go far enough in explaining how to internalize the identity they are describing. This booklet fills the void and tells you how.
So, Believer, are you tired of being encumbered with critical destructive view of yourself? It doesn’t have to be that way. You can transform your view of yourself and see yourself as God sees you. You can get one of the books above from Amazon, but while your at it, make sure you get this booklet—Identity in Christ: Making it Real. It will give you the answers, strategies, and methods to make your identity in Christ a reality.
